I CHOSE THIS VIDEO BECAUSE I LIKED HOW THE TEXTURES WERE APPLIED AND HOW THEY ENHANCED THE CONTOURS OF THE ORGANIC COLUMNS. THE "FOREST" LOOKED LIKE IT WAS CARVED OUT OF THE GROUND AND THE DIFFERENT OPENINGS MAKE REALLY INTERESTING LIGHTING EFFECTS WITHIN THE SPACE.

TRACEY MOFFATT’S COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS USUALLY INVOLVE A NARRATIVE, SUCH AS IN HER 1997 SERIES, “UP IN THE SKY.” ALTHOUGH THE STORY IS NOT EXPLICIT, THE SERIES IS MEANT TO REFLECT THE LIVES OF INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN AND THEIR STRUGGLES AGAINST A GOVERNMENT RELOCATION POLICY. THIS PHOTOGRAPH IS PART OF A SET OF 25 PHOTOGRAPHS ACTED OUT AND SHOT AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF QUEENSLAND’S OUTBACK. THEY WERE THEN PRINTED OUT USING THE TECHNIQUE CALLED OFFSET PRINTING WHICH INVOLVES TRANSFERRING THE IMAGE ON PRINTING PLATE ONTO A RUBBER AND THEN ONTO THE SURFACE TO BE PRINTED.



ROSALIE GASCOIGNE IS MOST WELL KNOWN FOR HER ARTWORKS PIECED FROM THINGS SHE FOUND AROUND HER, PARTICULARLY IN CANBERRA WHERE SHE RESIDED IN HER LATER YEARS. HAVING MOVED FROM NEW ZEALAND TO CANBERRA, HER WORK IS SAID TO REFLECT HER PERSPECTIVE OF THE AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPE. THIS PIECE, “FULL FATHOM FIVE,” WAS PART OF HER 1998 EXHIBITION WHERE ALL OF HER WORKS WERE MOSAICS MADE FROM PIECES OF WOODEN BOXES AND REFLECTIVE ROAD SIGNS. THIS WORK OF ART WAS MADE OF SCRAPS OF WOOD SHE HAD GATHERED THAT SHE HAD SAWN INTO BLOCKS. THEY WERE THEN ARRANGED AND MOUNTED ON A PIECE OF WOOD. SHE COMMONLY CHOSE MATERIALS LIKE CORRUGATED IRON, TIN, ENAMELWARE, WIRE AND (IN THIS CASE) WOOD THAT WITHSTOOD WEATHERING QUITE WELL.

HAVING PERIKURAS TAKEN WAS SOMETHING ALL OF US, EXCHANGE STUDENTS HAD TO DO WITH OUR JAPANESE HOST SISTERS AND FRIENDS. PERIKURAS ARE TINY STICKER PICTURES WHICH YOU CAN DECORATE BEFORE PRINTING OUT. THEY’RE PICTURES ON PICTURES. HERE IT’S PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING – LIKE A GIANT PERIKURA. EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS VIBRANT, FUN, PLAYFUL AND INFECTIOUSLY HAPPY - IN SHORT, JAPANESE. THIS WAS ALSO MY “COLOR EPIPHANY” – THAT DAY I DISCOVERED IT WAS OKAY TO BE GENEROUS WITH COLOR.



THIS IS ONE OF THE MANY TREE HOUSES DESIGNED BY THE GERMAN COMPANY BAUMRAUM . GROWING UP, TREE HOUSES WERE BIG FANTASIES OF MINE. ASIDE FROM MAKING ME NOSTALGIC, THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR REMINDS ME OF A FEW THINGS - TO BROADEN MY VIEW AND DEFINITION OF ARCHITECTURE, TO NEVER UNDERESTIMATE SEEMINGLY SIMPLE IDEAS, AND THAT INNOVATION IS A DAILY OCCURRENCE AND A HABIT I SHOULD PRACTICE.



THIS IS WHAT THE SETTING SUN WOULD LOOK LIKE IF YOU WERE SITTING ON A CLOUD…OR THE WINDOW SEAT OF AN AIRPLANE. LOOKING AT A VIEW LIKE THIS MAKES ME QUESTION HOW ANYONE COULD EVER THINK THERE WAS NO GOD, OR WONDER WHAT GENIUS IT REQUIRED FOR MANKIND TO DISCOVER THAT THE WORLD IS ROUND AFTER ALL.
